A true craftsman at the top of his trade, D. H. BROWN shows once a warrior, always a warrior. In “HONOR DUE” he takes you on a ride with more twists and turns than a winding mountain road! An excellent read and the psychological makeup of his characters is raw human nature, kill or be killed -— with love thrown in for complexity.

David, you truly have drawn me into a world I enjoy. At this point in my life, I'm past shoot-em-ups for the raw adventure, but I'm truly drawn to a writer who can create a character of depth and meaning. I can't wait to follow him in life with his further adventures.

D.H.BROWN comments:
Hal: You have made my day. Thank you! That's why I wrote the character the way I did. I to am long past the plain ol' shoot 'em up stories. Glad that came through. |

[HONOR DUE is] a splendid story and well told. I was pleased at the credibility throughout the complex tale, and liked the manner in which the use of a very high degree of technology on several fronts was handled. By that I mean when it got to a point where any attempt to describe the processes used to obtain information by some kind of highly sophisticated processes would have probably failed the credibility test, the means was put off on Blik. How he got the info the Major couldn't guess and didn't attempt to. And I as a reader didn't question Blik's abilities -- Blik used his techie skills somehow (and we were already aware of his expertise before he was ever called on to use them), and that worked just fine for me. Like any critical reader -- and I'm more critical than most -- I wondered throughout what was going to justify the Major's certainty that whatever was up (and to my satisfaction he tossed that around in his mind every way he could imagine) was going to justify his decisions to kill without hesitation until he got to the snake's head. That wonderment was fully satisfied by developments as we approached the end of the trail. I appreciated the use of days and military time in the chapter heads (and in the narrative itself). It helped keep me oriented as to where we were time-wise in the story. Using Google Earth I was able to hover at a thousand or so feet above the areas where events were occurring because of your uses of real place names -- towns, lakes, roads. Thank you so much for sending [HONOR DUE]. I enjoyed it extremely.

What a stunning debut novel! Jack Reacher and the Major would be the best of friends. Watch out Lee Child; D. H. Brown is at least your equal. Can't wait till the next book in the series.

About HONOR DUE: Forgive me, but all my earlier comments around critiquing your novel came from a misapprehension. I thought I would be struggling through a cobbled-together manuscript, the work of a struggling beginner. You’ve disabused me of all that nonsense! Your work is that of an experienced professional. For me there’s not much not to like in your HONOR DUE.
